The Midwestern Region of the United States includes 12 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The highest point in the Midwestern Region is Barney Peak at 7,242 feet in South Dakota with the lowest point being 237 feet at the Saint Francis River. Illinois

Illinois is bordered by Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin. I has a land area of 55,584 sq. miles, and a population of 12,713,634 as of 2004. The capital is Springfield and it was added as a US State on December 3, 1818. The state bird is the Cardinal, and the state flower is the Purple Violet. The highest point of Illinois is Charles Mound at 1,235 feet, and the low point is the Mississippi River at 279 feet.

Indiana

Indiana became a state on December 11, 1816. The capital is Indianapolis. Indiana has a land area of 35,867 sq. miles, and a population of 6,237,569 as of 2004. It is bordered by Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. The Indiana state bird is the Cardinal and the state flower is the Peony. The highest point is Hoosier Hill at 1,257 feet and the low point is 320 feet at its southwest boundary.

Iowa

Des Moines is the capital of Iowa, which became a US State on December 28, 1846. It is bordered by Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Iowa had a population of 2,954,451 as of 2004, and has a land area of 55,869. The highest point in Iowa is 1,670 feet and the lowest point is at the junction of the Mississippi and Des Moines Rivers at 480 feet. The state bird is the Eastern Goldfinch, and the state flower is the Wild Prairie Rose.

Kansas

Kansas has a land area of 81,815 sq. miles and had a population of 2,735,502 as of 2004. The capital of Kansas is Topeka, and the state became part of the US on January 29, 1861. Mt. Sunflower is the highest point at 4,039 feet and the lowest point is the Verdigris River at 257 feet. Kansas is bordered by Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The state flower is the Sunflower, and the state bird is the Western Meadowlark.

Michigan

The Michigan state bird is the Robin and the state flower is the Apple Blossom. The Capital city is Lansing. Michigan was added as a US State on January 26, 1837. It has a land area of 56,604 and a population of 10,112,620 as of 2004. Michigan is bordered by Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The highest point in Michigan is Mt Avron at 1,980 feet and the lowest point is at the shore of Lake Erie at 572 feet.

Minnesota

Minnesota has a land area of 79,610 and a population of 5,100,958 as of 2004. The Capital of Minnesota is Saint Paul. Minnesota is bordered by Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. It became a US State on May 11, 1858. The state bird is the Common Loon, and the state flower is the Pink and White Lady's Slipper. The highest point in Minnesota is Eagle Mountain at 2,301 feet and the lowest point is at the shore of Lake Superior at 302 feet.
