USA Travel Info Accessability Information

[] []

It is the goal of the USA Travel Website team to make this website available to as many people as possible, regardless of disability, or device used. While we may not have reached that milestone yet, we have attempted to design with everyone in mind.

Skip to Navigation Links and Content Links

Where some websites use Skip Navigation Links, this site will be useing "Skip to Main Navigation" Links. This site is layed out using css positioning, so the content is actually seen by a screen reader before the navigation. "Skip to Main Navigation" Links are being added after the main heading of each page and on some pages (depending on size) they are also located in the middle of the page. At the end of the Main Navigation Links there will be a "Skip to Content" Link which takes the user to the first heading of the page. These links are being implemented with those using screen readers in mind. Not all pages have been updated at this time.

Access Keys Not Used

Originally, this site was set up using Access Keys in the main navigation. I recently learned after doing a lot of research that access keys interfere with the operation of some screen readers and other programs including web browsers. To make a long story short, the use of access keys overrides the shortcut keys on these programs. I found that unacceptable and removed the access keys from the website and replaced them with the Skip Links describe above.

Validation Status

Most pages on this website should validate for HTML, CSS, and pass automated testing for accessability for both Section 508 and WAI. Since the site is in the development phase, there may be times when certain pages temporarily do not meet these standards.

Cell phones and PDA's

At this time we have not addressed hand held mobile units. We do plan to do so in the future. I believe the site has been disigned in such a manner that the website would be readable on a cell phone or PDA, although I have never tested it.
